Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy | FAQs

Hypnotherapy is an age-old practice that has been used by healers and various medical practitioners for centuries. Hypnotherapy offers many benefits as it can be used to treat a number of ailments, whether they are physical, emotional or mental. Alone or when used in conjunction with other methods of therapy, hypnotherapy can play an important role in protecting and promoting one's physical, mental and emotional health.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Be sure to get in touch if there are any questions you have which aren't answered below!

  • What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a type of psychotherapy. It is a guided form of therapy which makes use of a mixture of extreme concentration, attention, and relaxation to help an individual reach a heightened state of awareness, or a trance. Hypnosis, which is a form of hypnotherapy, is often used to enter into this state of altered awareness, in which an individual can access difficult thoughts, engage with painful emotions or become more open to suggestions that could bring about positive change. There are many benefits of hypnotherapy and, whether used alone or in conjunction with other forms of therapy, it can play a big role in protecting and promoting physical, emotional and mental health.

  • What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a technique used in hypnotherapy whereby the patient is guided into a trance-like or day-dream-like state that involves a mix of intense concentration, relaxation and attention. While under hypnosis, patients are able to engage with their subconscious mind, making them more open to suggestions and positive change.

  • Does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy has proven to be very successful treatment for a wide range of conditions, such as anxiety, insomnia, weight issues and even for bad habits like smoking or drinking. Though it is not the right treatment for every person, it is certainly a treatment worth trying, given the overwhelmingly positive results.

  • What can be treated with hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy can and has been used to treat, alter or improve upon a range of conditions and illnesses, such as:

    • anxiety
    • depression
    • grief
    • chronic pain
    • PTSD
    • stress
    • insomnia
    • OCD
    • various addictions, like drug addiction, alcoholism or smoking
    • weight problems
    • goal or aspiration achievements

When using hypnotherapy as a treatment, it is very important to understand that you must first want to change or improve. Wanting to quit smoking because you know it is bad for you is not the same as wanting to quit because you know quitting will improve your life!

  • How long does it take for hypnotherapy to work?

Like any form of therapy, hypnotherapy will impact every person differently. While some people may see or feel an immediate change, others might require a few more sessions before they start to see an improvement. This is because hypnotherapy deals with your subconscious mind which, though it may be more receptive of suggestions for change, can still take time to change habits or overcome addictions.

  • Does a hypnotised person lose control of themselves?

Not at all! You are in control at all times while in a hypnotic or trance state. You can control how deeply into that state you go, as well as when and how you come out of it. Hypnotherapy merely helps you reach this state of heightened awareness, in which you will be able to engage your subconscious mind and open yourself up to suggestions.

  • What are the benefits of hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an extremely effective tool, and there are many benefits to hypnotherapy. It is possible for hypnotherapy to streamline the road to improvement. For example, if you have been struggling with anxiety for your whole life, hypnotherapy can help you deal with that anxiety almost immediately. This is perhaps one of the greatest benefits of hypnotherapy - because of the power of your subconscious mind, you take action and start to enact the changes you want to see in your life much faster.

Hypnotherapy can also:

    • remove mental barriers preventing change
    • assist with feelings of calmness, relaxation and control
    • assist with pain management
    • help you replace bad habits with good ones

  • Does hypnotherapy work for everyone?

Like any treatment, medication or therapy, hypnotherapy will not work for everyone. It is a uniquely individual experience: some people might enter the trance state while others struggle; some might experience a very deep trance while others only enter a light trance - though for hypnotherapy to work, you do not need to enter a deep trance state. In order for hypnotherapy to work, you must be open to the idea and be comfortable with fully committing yourself to trying. For us to reach the subconscious mind that will help you change and improve your life, we must first pass your analytical mind which often has ideas of its own!

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy is not what you see in the movies - actual hypnotherapy isn't about putting someone under a spell or taking away their control. It's just the opposite!

The biggest benefit of hypnotherapy is that it puts the power to change your life back into your hands. It equips you with the weapons you need to fight the aspects of your life that you want to change, improve or eliminate.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy: Anxiety

As a tool, hypnotherapy benefits those who struggle with anxiety, nervousness or fear. Relaxation techniques like hypnosis can ease these feelings. Hypnosis encourages the body to reach a natural relaxation response through cues like slow breathing, lowering blood pressure, and instilling an overall sense of well-being.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy: Weight Loss

Hypnotherapy as an aid for weight loss does not act as a replacement for diets or exercise. Instead, it assist with removing mental barriers that prevent weight loss, such as overeating or a fear of exercising. Hypnosis can help change your frame of mind to enable you to handle any weight loss issues better and more easily.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy: Chronic Pain

Anyone dealing with chronic pain understands just how intensely it can affect your day-to-day life. Hypnotherapy can help individuals overcome that by enabling you to cope and deal with your pain. Over long periods of time, hypnosis can effectively aid you in managing your pain.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy: Smoking

Smoking can be an extremely hard habit to kick. Nicotine patches, prescription medications or "going cold turkey" doesn't always help. Hypnosis can help you address your addiction or emotional attachment to smoking and enable you to replace it with a more healthy or productive habit.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy: Insomnia

Hypnotherapy is a beneficial method of dealing with insomnia, sleeplessness and difficulty falling or staying asleep. It can even be a useful technique of dealing with sleepwalking. Hypnosis is a calm, relaxed, trance-like state that can aid you in teaching your body how to relax when it is time to sleep or rest.

Let's Talk Hypnotherapy

What is it costing you to remain stuck in old ways, with bad habits, behaviours, attitudes, negative emotions and thoughts?

Is there something you would really like to do in your life, but something is stopping you from doing it? Maybe you feel stuck and can’t move into better circumstances, or you struggle to break unwanted habits and behaviours? Whatever it is, you are probably using your conscious mind when contemplating what you want to achieve and are thinking of a reason why you can’t do it or achieve it!

Instead ask yourself, “What is the feeling that is stopping me from achieving this?”

And the reason I ask you to consider the feeling is because your emotions will always beat your logic.

We are either motivated to accomplish something based on feelings of confidence, belief, courage - all those wonderful, empowering, feel-good emotions that push us towards getting what we want. On the other hand, we can be demotivated and move away from something because we feel fear, rejection, failing, of not being good enough, or hurt and pain from past experiences - all these are negative emotions, beliefs and influences are disguised as what is keeping us safe and secure, but in reality are actually self-sabotaging behaviours and thoughts that can control us and prevent us from reaching our full potential and achieving our goals and aspirations.

Hypnotherapy, together with Matrix Therapy, is a powerful way to rewire your subconscious mind. Imagine shifting your beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, feelings and decisions to drive you towards things you want, easily and effortlessly, so you can experience new ways of being and have the success and happiness you desire.

If this is something you want for your life, hypnosis is the key to achieving it.

Hypnosis can seem scary – the unknown always is. In reality, hypnosis is a tried and tested therapeutic technique that has changed hundreds of thousands of lives.

I hear comments from people saying, “Hypnosis is mind control”, and my response is to ask “OK, which one do you think is being controlled?”  Their response is usually, “Oh, what do you mean?”

The fact is we have two minds, a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. What’s the difference? The conscious mind is your logical thinking mind, your subconscious mind is your feeling mind. Think about it, what drives you more? A thought or a feeling?

Hypnosis is not mind control because you are not unconscious, you have not lost control and you are not asleep. On the contrary, hypnosis is where you can actually gain power and control over your emotions and behaviours to help you achieve a better future.

A common misconception is, “Hypnosis will put me to sleep”, and the truth is, it actually wakes you up to the potential to become the best version of yourself that you can be but didn't know how. What are the possibilities for you to BE the person who naturally creates everything you have ever wanted to do and have?

I have clients who snore during hypnosis yet as soon as I emerge them, they open their eyes, feeling calm and relaxed and in complete control. How do they snore but remain conscious? This is because, during hypnosis, you enter a deep trance state – something you do all the time! Have you driven to work or home and paid very little attention to the drive itself? Or have you been so absorbed in a movie you lost where you are? That’s a deep trance state and when you are in this state, your conscious critical mind can move to the side and we can tap into your powerful subconscious mind, which is when we can rewire and recode your mind to create the changes you want in your life far more quickly, easily and permanently. I have clients that feel lighter, calmer, weightless, relaxed and who achieve a sense of freedom that they have been trying to achieve for a very long time.

The truth is, we cannot change our life until we change the subconscious programming that we have been running. This is the programming you have been using all your life, the one that was built and developed from a very early age and during your youth which shaped you as a person. Often, this programming is what prevents us from becoming the person we want to be, or from achieving our dreams.

Imagine being able to change the course of your life? To re-write your own programming to feel and be different?

As a Master Life Coach and Hypnotherapist, I take clients back on their timeline, through the memory bank of experiences they have had in their life that is filed in their subconscious - not to change it, because we can’t change the events and experiences we have in the past, but to change and free yourself from the emotional attachment we have to those experiences, to gather the powerful positive resources, the learnings and insights from these events and bring them back to your present self, to use them and empower you to make better decisions to create a life free of struggle, a life where you can feel whole and happy with your authentic self.

I help people heal from their past to change their future and become who they wish to be to have the life they want to live.
